Support Students

The Robert A. Ludwig Memorial Graduate Student Fund, an endowed fellowship established in honor of our colleague who succumbed to cancer in 2015, offers support to an outstanding graduate student selected annually by the MCD Biology Department. Growing this fund allows greater support for graduate students.

The Mary Zavanelli Fund for Undergraduate Research in the Health Sciences, an endowed fund formed by Mary’s family in her honor, offers meaningful research opportunities for undergraduates. This fund honors our colleague, Mary Zavanelli, an outstanding and inspirational MCD Biology teaching professor who was diagnosed with ALS in 2013, and by the end of Winter 2016, was no longer able to continue teaching. Mary taught some of UC Santa Cruz’s largest biology courses and has shaped the lives of students for more than 20 years.

Mary has requested that the fund be used to support undergraduate research in the health sciences. From her teaching experiences at UCSC, Mary knows that meaningful research opportunities for undergraduates are hard to find and yet can have a tremendous impact on students persisting in challenging science majors and ultimately on their career success. Her family has offered to match donations up to $25,000.

Support the Department and Faculty

The MCD Biology Fund goes to the area of greatest need in the department and provides crucial support for education and research. Donations brighten the future of our student and faculty researchers by allowing career growth and exciting new discoveries.

On the education side, donations can be used to support undergraduate students to carry out full-time summer research projects in faculty labs. The experience gained is especially important for them in gaining admission to top Ph.D. training programs. Donations also contribute to equipping the state-of-the-art research facilities that allow our faculty to carry out groundbreaking research. In addition, the funding supports the department in recruiting new faculty by providing them with extra resources to launch exciting, high-risk research projects that would not initially be funded by NIH or other outside agencies.
